When it comes to 'next man up,' Rams have strong example in Demarcus Robinson

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – With Cooper Kupp set to miss extended time with an ankle injury and Puka Nacua already on Injured Reserve with a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), other Rams receivers will be forced into bigger roles.

It's a scenario Demarcus Robinson knows well.

"Just relying on the practice, you know, relying on everything that I've been training for," Robinson said, when asked Monday what helped him find success in those situations. "I think that's kind of the mindset to take with it. You can't do nothing different. You just play the game as it is, and go out and do your best and try your best to help the team win. And I think that's all the guys in the room's job, is to just go out and trust your training, trust your technique, and whatever happens on the field happens."

Robinson will be imparting that advice on receivers like Tyler Johnson, Jordan Whittington and Tutu Atwell this week as Los Angeles adapts to being without Kupp and Nacua.

Whatever else Robinson learned from that experience clearly proved effective. Since his emergence in the second half of the 2023 season as a trusted target for quarterback Matthew Stafford, he has had 40 or more receiving yards in 8 of his last 9 games dating back to Week 13 of 2023, including the playoffs, according to NFL Media Research.

"Just taking a better approach, a stronger approach," Robinson said, when asked for his advice to younger receivers due for bigger roles. "Mentally, as we start this week off, just having guys more aware that there is going to be a bigger role for all of us. So just kind of honing in a little bit more on the details and everything else that we have to this week."

Robinson's success in doing so played a part in the Rams re-signing him this offseason. Now, he will be tasked with bringing others along with him and putting them in positions to succeed while Kupp and Nacua heal.

Stafford said he has trust in all of those receivers.

"(What this next work week looks like is) continue to grow with those guys," Stafford said postgame Sunday. "Try to help them out as much as I possibly can, give them good passes to catch and let those guys do their thing. I got a ton of trust in them. They've done a great job all through OTAs, training camp, all that kind of stuff. And I have some past game history with some of those guys."
