INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The Rams failed to get into the end zone in their 23-15 loss against the Dolphins on Monday Night Football. Despite totaling 327 yards, which was almost 100 more than Miami, Los Angeles failed to come through in key moments, going 3-for-12 on third down and 0-for-3 in the red zone.
After the game, head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford spoke with the media about the offensive struggles.
Here are the top quotes and talking points from the press conferences, which can be viewed below:
"We didn't do nearly a good enough job offensively... There just really was a lot of examples of the importance of continuity... We got to evaluate everything." - McVay
Despite getting offensive linemen Jonah Jackson and Steve Avila back from injured reserve, McVay said the offensive line play featured a lot of things that were "not in alignment with what we're looking for." That led to four sacks on Stafford and an inconsistent rushing attack.
McVay said that there were a lot of instances that showed how the Rams "haven't been consistent enough" and agreed that their play on Monday was "sloppy." He added that the execution has to be better and he was feeling "frustration, just live everyone else," during the game. He also highlighted their failure to come through in the red zone on three trips inside the 20-yard line.
McVay said the defense did "an amazing job" slowing the Miami offense and forcing turnovers, but the offense wasn't able to capitalize on those takeaways.
"It's just negative plays at the wrong time, right? Whether it's a turnover, a sack, an inefficient play on first down, whatever it was, we just shot ourselves in the foot, in that strike-zone area, that 30-yard-line-ish area." - Stafford
Stafford said that losing 10 yards on the first offensive play of the game is "not what you want" and the negative plays piled on after that. He echoed McVay in saying that the offense was "inconsistent" and fell victim to turnovers at inopportune moments.
The Dolphins threw a lot of different pressure looks at Stafford and the Rams' offensive line, but Stafford said that Jackson "handled himself well" at center in his return. However, he was under pressure all night and was sacked four times. Stafford added that he trusts Jackson and Avila, along with the rest of the offensive line.
Stafford said Miami tried to "keep a shell on the coverage" by playing various coverages with two deep safeties which forced check downs.
