Free Agent Spotlight: WR Tyler Johnson provided reliable depth when called upon

Late in the third quarter of Week 1 against the Lions, Rams wide receiver Tyler Johnson caught a pass in the flat from quarterback Matthew Stafford, hen pivoted and turned upfield for a 63-yard, catch-and-run play.

Johnson ultimately finished with five receptions for 79 yards in a game Los Angeles saw one of its top two receivers get injured in Puka Nacua.

Now, he's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year arrives on March 12.

Should the Rams re-sign Johnson, the move would bring back a 26-year-old receiver who has two seasons' worth of familiarity with their offense, dating back to when he first joined the organization in 2023 as a practice squad player. Although his production and playing time took a dip as Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua got healthy, Johnson's 26 receptions for 291 yards marked the second-most productive season of his NFL career.

If the Rams and Johnson go in a different direction, Jordan Whittington could be an internal candidate to replace him because of his similar frame and explosiveness. As previously noted, Los Angeles has also leaned on both free agency and the draft in previous years as external avenues.
