WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Rams head coach Sean McVay on Wednesday said the team won't place wide receiver Cooper Kupp (ankle) on Injured Reserve (IR) "as of right now," but doing so is still a possibility.
"It's not like that (IR) decision has been finalized," McVay said prior to Wednesday's practice. "But as of right now, we're not going to go in that direction with him."
McVay on Monday said Kupp, safety John Johnson III (shoulder) and offensive lineman Jonah Jackson (shoulder) were all slated to miss "an extended period of time" due to their respective injuries sustained last Sunday against the Cardinals, and also candidates for IR.
Johnson and Jackson were placed on IR on Wednesday. Not doing so with Kupp yet was not a reflection of having more clarity on Kupp's timeline, according to McVay, but rather managing the maximum allotment of eight designated to return slots.
McVay also reiterated Kupp's ankle sprain is not season-ending and said the injury will not require surgery. Kupp will be in a cast for the next week, then begin the rehab process.
"I don't want to put any expectations or unnecessary things on him," McVay said regarding a return timeline for Kupp. "He's going to do everything in his power to get back. Whenever that is, we'll be excited about that and happy for him."
