Pass game coordinator/assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant to serve as head coach for Rams against Chargers: 'It's a great, earned opportunity'

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Rams pass game coordinator/assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant will serve as team's head coach for Saturday's preseason game against the Chargers, head coach Sean McVay said.

McVay will be in the coach's booth while Pleasant leads the staff from the sideline.

"No, he doesn't need (any tips from me)," McVay said after Tuesday's practice. "Listen, I wouldn't follow my lead but he's ready to go. He's earned this right and it's more of just going through some of the mechanics – meeting with the officials, handling some of the different things as it relates to timeouts, being able to communicate with both sides."

The Rams have typically approached the preseason differently when it comes to coaching staff responsibilities, the most known example being switching up the offensive and defensive play-callers for those games.

McVay said he remembers when he got opportunities when he was in Washington and appreciated those chances in hindsight, and may have not realized how beneficial they were at the time.

McVay reiterated the way Pleasant earned the title because of Pleasant's influence and positive effect on the team as a whole, and said Saturday is "a great, earned opportunity and he'll do an excellent job."

"That certainly isn't exclusive to whatever the result is," McVay said. "It's more of the management and the way that you just handle everything from the players to the coaches, and it'll be cool to see.
