Game Recap: Rams' 2024 season ends with 28-22 loss to Eagles in Divisional Round of playoffs

PHILADELPHIA – For the Rams to rebound from a 1-4 start to reach the playoffs is a remarkable achievement in and of itself. Unfortunately, that ride ended Sunday with a 28-22 loss to the Eagles on a snowy Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in the divisional round.

A safety by nose tackle Neville Gallimore cut Los Angeles' deficit to 16-15 with 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter. However, that momentum stalled with two fourth quarter fumbles: One by running back Kyren Williams on the possession following the free kick after the safety, and another on quarterback Matthew Stafford getting strip-sacked on the offensive series after that.

Philadelphia was held to field goals after both of those turnovers, but a 78-yard touchdown run by Eagles running back Saquon Barkley effectively put the game out of reach when it gave them a 28-15 lead with 4:36 to play.

The Rams responded with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Stafford to tight end Colby Parkinson to cut their deficit to 28-22, then got a defensive stop – while using all three of their timeouts – and the ball back at their own 18 with 2:23 to play.

The Rams reached the Eagles 13 with 1:19 remaining, but then Stafford was sacked on 3rd and 2 for a loss of 9. His incomplete deep pass intended for wide receiver Puka Nacua on fourth down sealed the result.

Los Angeles' defense notched seven sacks in the loss, led by outside linebacker Jared Verse's two, but Barkley was the difference-maker with 26 carries for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive end Braden Fiske exited the game early with a knee injury and was ruled questionable to return before being downgraded to out early in the second half.

Here is the complete game recap, presented by Toyota:

The Eagles struck first with a 44-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jalen Hurts on the opening drive to take an early 7-0 lead. Hurts shook loose from an ankle tackle on the keeper, then followed his blockers downfield for the score.

Sustained by a conversion on 4th and 1 from the Eagles 10, the Rams matched the Eagles with a touchdown drive of their own via a 4-yard pass from Stafford to tight end Tyler Higbee. That drive was also sustained by the Rams successfully challenging and overturning an initial incomplete ruling on a third-down catch by Higbee.

After L.A.'s offense went 3-and-out, Philadelphia capitalized with a 62-yard touchdown run by Barkley to regain the lead 13-7 with 1:07 remaining in the first quarter.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Stafford launched a 48-yard completion to wide receiver Demarcus Robinson on the second play of the ensuing series. However, due to a holding penalty and a run getting stopped for a loss of a yard on third down, the Rams were forced to settle for a 30-yard field goal to cut the Eagles lead to 13-10 early in the second quarter.

Philadelphia appeared primed to score on the next possession until Verse sacked Hurts on third down for a 9-yard loss, which forced the Eagles out of field goal range and to ultimately punt. The Rams couldn't capitalize, though, and had to punt on the following drive.

Because of a second-down sack-fumble by Rams linebacker Omar Speights, the Eagles were left to attempt a hail mary at the end of the ensuing series that took the clock all the way down to 3 seconds left. The attempt was unsuccessful, as Verse notched his second sack with a 9-yard takedown of Hurts, keeping the Rams within 3 at halftime.

Both teams exchanged 3-and-outs to start the second half before the Rams executed back-to-back 30 yard gains (completion to Kupp, run by Williams) to reach the Eagles 8. However, they lost 7 on a botched exchange between Stafford and Williams on the next play and couldn't recover, forced to settle for a 34-yard field goal by Karty to tie the game 13-13 with 7:37 left in third quarter.

The Eagles had an explosive 31-yard gain of their own on third down - a completion from Hurts to tight end Dallas Goedert when a Rams safety slipped – in response, but had to settle for a 44-yard field goal to regain the lead 16-13 with 2:19 to go in the third quarter.

Two key drops derailed the following drive for the Rams offense, but their defense made up for it taking down Hurts in the endzone for a safety, cutting the Rams' deficit to one with 27 seconds left in the third quarter.

On the ensuing possession off the free kick, a Williams fumble was scooped up by Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter and returned 40 yards to the Rams 10. However, thanks to a false start on 4th and goal from the 1, Philadelphia settled for a chip-shot field goal, making it 19-15 Eagles with 13:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles' strip-sack on Stafford only resulted in 3 points, but it gave them extra distance. Barkley's 78-yard touchdown run extended that lead to 28-15 with 4:36 to go.

After Stafford's 4-yard touchdown pass to Parkinson, the Rams defense got a late stop to give the offense one last gasp, but that ended after Stafford's incomplete fourth down pass intended for Nacua from the Eagles 22.
