PHILADELPHIA – It came down to the final minute, but a failed fourth-and-11 conversion from just outside the Eagles' red zone ended the Rams' season in the Divisional Round. The defensive front showed out for a second-straight week, collecting seven sacks after their nine-sack performance in the Wild Card round. But, three long rushing touchdowns of 40+ yards catapulted Philadelphia ahead of Los Angeles, 28-22.
After the game, head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford spoke with the media about the performance and their disappointment that a "special" season is over.
Here are the most significant quotes and talking points from those press conferences, which can be viewed below:
"Man, I'm damn proud to be associated with this football team. I didn't see it going any other way than us winning that game 29-28 (on the final drive). And I think this game in a lot of ways epitomized the resilience, the grit, the ability to overcome adversity. Just had a couple things that we couldn't overcome." - McVay
After the game, McVay said that "this is the time for gratitude and appreciation." He reiterated his love for this team, from players to coaches and staff, adding that this was "a special season." He said it's "as much fun as" he's had coaching, and "there was something really special" about this team in particular. After the game, McVay spoke from his heart to the team, but he was "pretty shocked."
Running back Saquon Barkley, who accounted for 232 yards, was "excellent," McVay said, and he added that there were "some different layers" that they added to the defense from the Week 12 loss, but "when Saquon got to the second level, similar to the first game... he was able to pull away." He also said the Rams' two turnovers "were really costly," and those might not have occurred in better conditions.
The Rams were "a couple plays away" from McVay being "a lot happier," he said. He reiterated multiple times that he didn't see the game ending any other way than 29-28 in the Rams' favor on that final drive. He also said there was a miscommunication on the third-and-four sack that put L.A. in a fourth-and-long situation.
Stafford suffered a rib injury in the first quarter, but gutted through the pain, McVay said. At the end of the day, he said football "can bring you the highest of highs and man, it can bring you the lowest of lows." This was the latter for McVay as a special season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion. He said "the finality of it is tough for me to swallow."
"We'd love to have scored at the end. Obviously felt like, as an offense, we had them on the ropes, but they probably felt that too, and we were moving the rock really well the last two drives, and then, just a couple kind of unforced errors here and there and got behind the sticks. And you do that against the team like that with a defense like that. It's going to be a difficult thing to overcome." - Stafford
Stafford said there were "some things" they could have done to avoid that fourth-and-11, but he's "not going to dwell on that." In terms of the snow, he said "it was difficult" to execute, but added that it was probably harder to catch than it was to throw. Stafford's rib injury was aggravated in the first quarter, and he said he's been "dealing with those kind of things to a varying degree for some time," but he was able to calm it down and it wasn't a big factor down the stretch.
This squad played a "total team effort," Stafford said, not just in the Divisional Round, but every time they stepped on the field this year. He added that "it's disappointing to end it this way, but proud of the way we battled." Stafford said he is "proud to be associated with this group, coaching staff, front office, group of players, training staff, equipment guys, everybody" within the Rams organization.
When asked about his future, Stafford said "I feel like I was playing some pretty good ball," and when asked if he has football left in him, he added that it "sure feels like it."
