Key offseason moves

  • Signed Jimmy Garoppolo. The 32-year-old Garoppolo signed a 1-year deal with the Rams this spring after being released by the Raiders. Brought in as Matthew Stafford's backup, general manager Les Snead at the NFL Annual Meeting in March said while the Rams were "fans" of Carson Wentz – last season's backup during the second half of the season – they felt Garoppolo's familiarity with their system and playing style made him a better fit. Garoppolo worked with offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur when LaFleur was with the 49ers, and Jerry Schuplinski – hired as a senior offensive assistant this offseason – when Schuplinski was with the Raiders.
  • Onboarded Stetson Bennett back onto the team. Bennett spent his entire rookie season on the Reserve/NFI list, then re-joined the team at the start of the offseason program.

What's next

Getting the backups up to speed. While Garoppolo is familiar with the Rams' offense, continuing to build that will be critical. Along those lines, with Garoppolo missing first two games of the season due to suspension, that places increased importance on getting Bennett re-acclimated to the offense during training camp.
