Un simple dato ayuda a ilustrar lo extraordinario del partido de este lunes por la noche: por primera en la historia de la NFL se enfrentan dos equipos de distintas conferencias que han perdido sólo un juego luego de las primeras 10 jornadas de una temporada… La primera vez en miles y miles de partidos programados desde la fusión de la liga en 1970.
A todas luces el juego más atractivo en lo que va de la campaña, Los Angeles Rams vs. Kansas City Chiefs ha sido tema de conversación por días, incluso semanas. Algo tuvo que ver en ello la decisión de la NFL de mover el partido de su sede original, el Estadio Azteca de la Ciudad de México, al Memorial Coliseum, aunque en realidad el encuentro no necesitaba de acontecimientos externos ni publicidad extra para atrapar la atención de los aficionados a la NFL.
Sin contar playoffs, se trata del juego más destacado de los Rams desde su regreso a L.A., y el kickoff está cada vez más cerca.
Los analistas esperan que Rams vs. Chiefs sea como una pelea de "fajadores" en el ring, como un "derby de jonroneros"… un choque de locomotoras a las que nadie ha podido frenar en 2018.
Rams y Chiefs no solamente han sido los equipos más dominantes de la NFL, han sido los dos clubes más espectaculares, con ofensivas que han anotado más puntos que nadie y con quarterbacks que ya emprenden la carrera por el trofeo "MVP".
Rams y Chiefs cuentan ambos con buenos jugadores en sus defensas, pero éstas palidecen ante el poder de los ataques. Un dato de Las Vegas ayuda a explicar esto de mejor forma.
Las casas de apuestas establecieron en 63.5 la línea de puntos totales para el juego del lunes, es decir, la línea para apostar "altas" o "bajas" de puntos. Nunca en la historia de las apuestas de NFL se había presentado un número tan elevado. Los expertos creen, pues, que Rams y Chiefs anotarán el lunes al mismo ritmo que lo han hecho en las anteriores 10 semanas, en las que Kansas City promedió 35.3 puntos y Los Ángeles 33.5.
Los hombres clave
Cuando los Chiefs decidieron hacer un atrevido cambio durante el Draft de 2017 para subir a la posición 10 de la primera ronda y seleccionar a Patrick Mahomes, muchos analistas y aficionados se sorprendieron. Un año más tarde, el equipo dejó ir al confiable veterano Alex Smith para darle los controles a Mahomes. El entrenador Andy Reid y sus Chiefs no pudieron haber sido más atinados.
La actuación de Mahomes del lunes por la noche en la semana 4 en Denver, cuando incluso lanzó un pase clave con la mano izquierda, fue de impacto; su labor espectacular en el domingo por la noche de la semana 6 en Nueva Inglaterra en un mano a mano con Tom Brady confirmó que los grandes reflectores no le molestan.
"Es un excelente jugador, por eso lo escogieron como lo escogieron cuando cambiaron a Alex (Smith)", dijo esta semana Marcus Peters, el esquina de los Rams que fue parte de los Chiefs hasta la campaña pasada.
"Yo ya vi en entrenamientos el año anterior todas sus habilidades que ustedes están viendo ahora", agregó Peters, quien vive una temporada difícil en su nuevo club y que estará bajo mucha presión ante los dinámicos Chiefs. "Tienes que jugar".
Mahomes, hijo de un expitcher de las Ligas Mayores, ha sido la sensación de la NFL desde el inicio de la temporada, recibiendo la ayuda de varios "play makers" que tiene en su arsenal, como el corredor Kareem Hunt (1,091 yardas totales, 13 TDs), el súper veloz receptor Tyreek Hill (55 recepciones, 891 yardas, 9 TDs), y el peligroso ala cerrada Travis Kelce (57-787-6).
Pero mientras la defensa carnera, clasificada como No. 13 de la liga en yardas permitidas, tiene enfrente otro reto gigante como aquel cuando visitó a Nueva Orleáns, la zaga de Kansas City parece destinada a una noche larga y miserable contra la ofensiva que dirige magistralmente luego de 10 semanas Jared Goff.
Goff no podrá contar más en esta temporada con Cooper Kupp, operado de la rodilla izquierda tras la lesión sufrida el domingo pasado en la victoria sobre Seattle. Pero con el nivel que muestran Brandin Cooks y Robert Woods, la ausencia de Kupp no debería sentirse demasiado, sobre todo por el nivel de "MVP" de Todd Gurley.
El mejor corredor del momento en la NFL ya ha anotado 17 touchdowns, 13 de ellos por la vía terrestre, y llega al partido solamente a 12 yardas de la marca de las 1,000 en la temporada. Está por verse si Kansas City, el No. 29 de la NFL en yardas permitidas, tiene con qué frenar a Gurley y al ataque en conjunto, porque L.A. ha anotado al menos 33 puntos en ocho de sus 10 partidos.

Los Rams, que todavía el fin de semana eran marcados favoritos por 3.5 puntos, pueden beneficiarse de una semana de entrenamiento en la altitud de Colorado, a donde el equipo viajó desde el lunes pasado pensando que el régimen les dejaría listos para jugar en la Ciudad de México.
Tras la cancelación del juego en la capital mexicana, ellos decidieron quedarse en Colorado para no alterar su preparación, además de que la logística en el sur de California aún presentaba retos debido a los efectos de los devastadores incendios recientes. El estar concentrados en un mismo lugar fue valorado por el entrenador Sean McVay desde el punto de vista de la unión grupal en un conjunto ya de por sí muy integrado.
La serie histórica le favorece por 7-4 a Kansas City, que ha ganado los anteriores seis partidos –los seis disputados cuando la franquicia de los Rams jugaba en San Luis– entre ambos clubes. Se trata de su primer enfrentamiento en Los Ángeles desde 1991 y también es el primer partido de lunes por la noche para el equipo carnero en el Memorial Coliseum desde 1979.
