Former Rams head coach John Robinson dies at 89

John Robinson, who was previously the winningest coach in franchise history and served as head coach of the Rams from 1983-91, has died at the age of 89.

Robinson was honored with a moment of silence prior to Monday night's game against the Dolphins.

"We are heartbroken to share that former Los Angeles Rams head coach John Robinson passed away earlier today. Coach Robinson holds the record for most regular season wins in Rams franchise history," the Rams said in a statement. "He also won four Rose Bowls and a national championship as the head coach of USC and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009. Our thoughts are with Coach Robinson's family and friends, and all who he impacted throughout his storied career."

Between the regular season and playoffs, Robinson amassed 79 career victories. That distinction as winningest head coach in franchise history stood for 33 years, until current head coach Sean McVay recently passed it when the Rams defeated the Vikings 30-20 in Week 8 this season.

The Rams reached the playoffs in six of Robinson's first seven seasons, including a pair of NFC Championship game appearances. Running back Eric Dickerson led the NFL in rushing thrice during Robinson's tenure – including a still-NFL-record 2,105 in 1984. Additionally, running back Greg Bell authored back-to-back 1,000 yards seasons, as well as the franchise record of 10 consecutive games with a rushing touchdown from 1988-89.

Multiple familiar coaching names worked alongside Robinson during his time in Los Angeles as well, such as Norv Turner, Hudson Houck and Gill Haskell.

After the Rams and Robinson parted ways following the 1991 season, Robinson returned to the college level with a return to USC (1993-97) and a stop at UNLV (1999-2004); he also served as UNLV's athletic director from 2002-2003 and a senior consultant for LSU's athletic department from 2019-2021. USC inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

Robinson originally began his coaching career at USC (1976-82) and has been regarded as one of the school's most popular and successful football coaches. He led the Trojans the 1978 national championship, 8 bowl game appearances and a winning percentage of .741 while going 104-35-4 across both stints.
