'You've got to be kidding me': Puka Nacua's dominant performance helps Rams top Bills in huge home win

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Tom Brady said it best – "You've got to be kidding me!"

With a three-point lead in the third quarter, quarterback Matthew Stafford dropped back to pass from midfield. With the pass rush closing in, he lofted a ball to wide receiver Puka Nacua on an out route that traveled further and higher than Nacua's route was taking him. So, in classic Nacua fashion, he adjusted, high-pointed the ball and tapped both toes in bounds for a circus catch and a 19-yard gain.

"When I see the track and it spins so right, I'm like, 'I know exactly where this ball is going to be,'" Nacua said of the catch. "... (Stafford) came to the sideline and was like, 'Man, I got guys all in my face.' I'm like, 'Well, you put in the right spot'... I don't care if you're throwing it blind or he's got all eyes on me. He's never missing."

Brady couldn't believe Nacua got both feet down on the FOX broadcast call, and when he's impressed, you know you've done something special. According to Next Gen Stats, that pass had just a 21.3% chance of being completed, making it the third-least likely completion of Week 14 thus far. And then Nacua finished that drive off with a four-yard rushing touchdown.

Pretty much everything in Nacua's periphery ended up in his hands on Sunday, as he reached season-highs in receiving yards (162) and receptions (12) in the 44-42 win over Buffalo. He also added 16 rushing yards on five carries and two total touchdowns. Nacua was winning jump balls, separating on his intermediate routes and fighting for extra yards after contact. Every aspect of his eclectic skill set was on full display against the Bills.

"He was such an igniter today," said head coach Sean McVay. "... Igniter is one of the biggest compliments I can give somebody. You elevate everybody around you. You bring an energy to this football team. And he certainly did that."

Six of Nacua's receptions and 86 of his yards came in the intermediate area (10-19 yards downfield) and he took four screen passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. He caught two balls within nine yards of the line and none over 20 yards from it. Nacua operated almost exclusively in his bread-and-butter areas.

Another spectacular catch came on a must-have third-and-10 in Rams territory. Nacua ran a corner route and leapt up in the air to catch the ball at its peak once again and landed in bounds for a first down. That was his second contested catch of the game on as many attempts, which is something his mentor Cooper Kupp is accustomed to seeing.

"He's a hooper at heart, and it shows." Kupp said. "... He can elevate, as much as it pains me say, he can jump. That's been a thing that he's shown over and over again."

That drive also ended in a Rams touchdown, and Nacua's rushing score earlier in the game set it up, as they faked another jet sweep and then pitched it to running back Kyren Williams for a seven-yard score. He was impacting plays even without the ball in his hands.

Earlier on, Nacua's off-schedule catch on the first drive was "as big as any to be able to kind of catapult the offense," McVay said. Stafford escaped the pocket and, rather than continuing on his route, Nacua backtracked toward Stafford, and they connected for a 17-yard gain that was crucial to the Rams' fast start. Their connection only grew from there, as only two of Nacua's targets fell incomplete.

It was only fitting that Nacua was the one to ice the game with a 19-yard screen pass for a touchdown. Stafford changed that play at the line after he saw a blitz coming, and it was the perfect call. Nacua ran free after a huge block from Kupp and hopped over the goal line to put the Rams up 44-35 inside of two minutes remaining.

"(I have) full trust in those guys and Cooper, and especially big Rob (Havenstein), that was the second guy to get out there," Nacua said.

Nacua broke so many career milestones in this game that it was difficult to keep track, all while helping the Rams pick up a huge win against a tough opponent and advance over .500 for the first time this season.

"This is what it feels like when the Rams are moving on and connecting on all cylinders," Nacua said.
