THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur each held press conferences with local media Wednesday, looking ahead to tomorrow's joint practice with the Cowboys in Oxnard and Sunday's preseason opener against them at SoFi Stadium.
Here are some of the highlights and key takeaways from those conversations, which you can watch below:
"Up front, Kobie Turner, Bobby Brown, Byron Young, Jared Verse, I thought those guys did a really good job just showing up and competing against a really good offensive line and really physical run scheme and different stuff than we're used to seeing from (head coach) Sean (McVay)." – Shula
- Shula's immediate takeaway from last Sunday's joint practice was the performance by the defensive front.
- In the secondary, Shula said defensive backs Kam Curl "has been excellent," and defensive backs Quentin Lake and Russ Yeast also performed well. Shula also said Cobie Durant and Trey White "did an excellent job just playing calm outside at corner."
"We plan to have a great practice, and Dak (Prescott)'s a great player, and they got great skill, even with (wide receiver) CeeDee Lamb out. So it'll be a great challenge." – Shula
- While the Rams defense practiced against a Chargers offense without its QB1 – Justin Herbert was sidelined with a plantar fascia injury – that won't be the case Thursday going against the Prescott-led Cowboys offense.
- In terms of what he wants to see out of his unit in the joint practice with the Cowboys, Shula said "the ability to respond," knowing some plays won't always go there way.
"There's two things, what does our tape want to look like when it's silent, what is our play style? What kind of identity are we trying to create?" – LaFleur
- Those were LaFleur's takeaways from this past Sunday's joint practice with the Chargers, emphasizing the need to have a "good urgency." To that end, he's seen exactly that the last few days.
- It's early in the preseason, so LaFleur ultimately wants players to learn from this opportunities by not making the same mistake twice.
"It's going to be good work for our guys. And so we'll see what guys are going to step up and do what they can do against him." – LaFleur
- As for the Rams offense, the second joint practice of the preseason will feature yet another top pass rusher in the NFL in the Cowboys' Micah Parsons.
- Dallas defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is looking to give Parsons more responsibility in his system, so it will be interesting to see how that carries over into Thursday's joint practice going against Los Angeles' offensive line.
