INGLEWOOD, Calif. – When wide receiver Jordan Whittington walked into the locker room Sunday morning, seeing his Rams uniform for the first time was an overwhelming moment.
"I've dreamed of being here, so just seeing my name on the back of an NFL jersey, it was was a lot," Whittington said. "And I remember before the game, I was praying, and I was like, 'God, if this life only exists in my dreams, don't wake me up.' The whole time, I was just enjoying it, man. That's what it was about."
Much like he showed at Texas, Whittington later that day proved the moment wasn't too big for him. As quarterback Stetson Bennett's go-to target, he led Los Angeles with six receptions for 74 yards in the Rams' 13-12 win over the Cowboys on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
The 6-foot-1, 202-pound receiver – converted to that position from running back in college – showed why he could be a friendly target on L.A.'s first offensive series. He corralled a 13-yard reception on Bennett's first pass of the game, then a few players later had a 30-yard catch in which the majority of those yards came after shedding a would-be tackler.
"Boys was hitting me, right? Y'all saw that? I was getting smacked!" Whittington said with a smile. "Just catch-first mentality. Don't take your eyes off the ball until it stops spinning, and then after that you can make a move."
Bennett postgame regretting not being able to connect with Whittington on a corner route that would've gone for 18 yards – it was called back due to a penalty against the Rams – but said he thought Whittington "played really well."
"I thought he blocked well. I thought he was all the way in there," Bennett said. "I thought he fought for the ball."
Rams head coach Sean McVay postgame called Whittington "a mature rookie" and that Sunday's performance was "a good start for him."
"He's a grown man and he played like a grown man with the ball in his hands, did a great job without it," McVay said. "I just really like him. He's going to be a factor for us and I thought today was a good start for him and he's the type of guy that's only going to continue to grow from that."
