Five Takeaways from Rams' 13-12 Preseason Week 1 win over Cowboys: Stetson Bennett saves best throw for last; Jordan Whittington and Tyler Davis shine in debuts

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Quarterback Stetson Bennett overcame four interceptions to throw the game-winning 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Miller Forristall with 4 seconds left, lifting the Rams to a 13-12 preseason-opening win over the Cowboys on Sunday at SoFi Stadium. Wide receiver Jordan Whittington and defensive lineman Tyler Davis' performances also stood out in the victory.

Here are five takeaways from the contest. 5 Takeaways for Preseason Week 1 against the Cowboys is presented by Paramount+.

Quarterback Stetson Bennett saves best throw for last; wide receiver Jordan Whittington and defensive lineman Tyler Davis shine in preseason debuts vs. Dallas Cowboys

1) Extended look at quarterback Stetson Bennett: This marked Bennett's first live game reps in almost a full calendar year. Leading into the game, there was a possibility of Jimmy Garoppolo playing, but head coach Sean McVay said he was only going to if Garoppolo asked. Instead, Bennett and Dresser Winn were the only quarterbacks who dressed and played against the Cowboys, with Bennett getting the start.

Bennett looked comfortable on Los Angeles' first series, completing 4 of 5 pass attempts for 46 yards and rushing five yards for a fourth-down conversion to set up its first points, a 28-yard field goal by Joshua Karty for a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Bennett finished 24 of 38 for 224 yards with one touchdown against four interceptions overall, helming all 9 of their offensive series.

2) Jordan Whittington has strong debut: The rookie wide receiver's frame (6-foot-1, 202 pounds) and background as a former running back (broken tackles, yards after catch) helped him be a friendly target for Bennett, recording a team-high five receptions for 67 yards in the first half. Whittington finished with six catches for 74 yards on nine targets, all of which were team-highs.

3) Tyler Davis impresses: The Rams rookie defensive lineman notched two total tackles (one for loss) and one QB hit in the first half while generating consistent pressure from the interior. Overall, he tied for the team lead with 6 total tackles (one for loss) and added one QB hit.

4) Kicker watch: Karty was the first to handle kickoffs and the team's first field goal attempts. Overall, he made 2 of 2 field goal attempts (28 and 39 yards) and his lone extra point attempt. Tanner Brown took over in the second half, but it was Karty who took the extra point attempt following the game-winning touchdown.

5) More clarity on Blake Corum's role: Kyren Williams not playing in the preseason was to be expected as one of the offense's experienced contributors, but Corum being in street clothes for Sunday's game also further solidified the progress he continues to make toward having a complementary role behind Williams at running back.
