From the Podium: Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford discuss defensive aggression, offensive execution after win over Raiders

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The Rams improved to 2-4 on Sunday in a defensive battle with the Raiders that featured four caused turnovers from the Rams' defense. They had four in five games coming into the matchup.

Coming off its bye week, Los Angeles emphasized creating turnovers, and they did just that in the 20-15 win over Las Vegas. After the game, head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford spoke with the media about the defense's plan of attack and the offense's execution.

Here are the top quotes and talking points from the press conferences, which can be viewed below:

"I think we are starting to find our (defensive) identity, putting guys in the right spots, being able to take advantage of their skill sets, we got healthier where you get some healthier bodies back on the backend... I'm really pleased with the trajectory of where our defense is going right now." - McVay

The Rams' defense succeeded at all three levels on Sunday, something they hadn't really done previously this season. They generated pressure, covered well down the field to avoid explosive plays and defended the run well. McVay said "there are multiple things that we can present," and that led to turnovers and a complete defensive effort today.

McVay said he was "really pleased" with the defense and he "doesn't take for granted how hard it is to get wins" in the NFL, especially when they're led by the defense instead of the offense. Undrafted rookie safety Jaylen McCollough's two interceptions along with a forced fumble (turned touchdown) and interception from cornerback Cobie Durant helped the defense "carry the torch."

Of the offense, he said the problem was "execution" and that was a factor in another scoreless first quarter. He added that there were "some lapses" when transferring their practice plans into game situations.

"We're in no position to be, you know, choosy when it comes to wins right now. So we'll take them any way we can get them. It was a grimy, gritty one today, our defense played great. Guys up front did a nice job, ran the ball efficiently and effectively down there in the red zone. I think we gotta look at what we did well in this game, continue to do that, find the areas where we can improve, and do it in a heartbeat." - Stafford

Stafford thought the offense could have executed better today, but they were efficient in the red zone, an area they'd struggled in previously, and that is something to build on. They went 2-for-3 on trips inside the 20-yard line, capped off by two rushing touchdowns from running back Kyren Williams. That was one of the things Stafford said was a positive from this game.

Stafford said they need to be better with diagnosing defenses early on to get off to faster starts. The Raiders' approach was "a little bit different from what you thought early on," but he thought they were able to "weather the storm" and move the ball down the stretch.

Now, the Rams will have a short week before taking on the Vikings on Thursday Night Football, with star wide receiver Cooper Kupp expected to return: "I'm excited for (Kupp). Excited for our offense and our team."
