Countdown to Camp is a series breaking down the Rams roster by position group heading into the team's first open training camp practice. The seventh installment examines the running backs.
One of the key comments to the Rams offense returning to form in 2023 was the play of the running backs.
In concert with the re-tooled offensive line, Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro selection Kyren Williams led the backfield with 228 carries for 1,144 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. His 12 rushing touchdowns were tied with Derrick Henry for fifth-most among all running backs in the NFL, while his 1,144 rushing yards were third-most in the league.
Royce Freeman became a free agent in the offseason and signed with the Cowboys, but Ronnie Rivers returned after being tendered as an exclusive rights free agent. 2023 sixth-round pick Zach Evans is also back; he primarily contributed on special teams as a rookie in the 10 games he played in last year.
Then there's the new additions via the draft and free agency.
Los Angeles used a third-round pick on Michigan record-setting running back Blake Corum, and also signed former Eagles running back Boston Scott to a 1-year deal. Rams head coach Sean McVay has said that Corum's skillset is similar to Williams, so it will be interesting to see what that means for his within the rotation over the course of camp. While OTAs had no pads or live contact, Scott still showed he has plenty of burst.
Trench Warfare's Brandon Thorne in the first edition of his 2024 Offensive Line Almanac selected the Rams' projected starting offensive line as the NFC's breakout unit, and also wrote that "the pieces are in place for the results to lead to an elite ground game in 2024."
Williams and running backs coach Ron Gould like the sound of that.
Between Williams' breakout second season and the size of the interior offensive line, the pieces are in place for the Rams to move inside the top 10 in rushing yards this season, after being on the cusp of it last season (11th at 120.3 yards per game).
