He joins the team after spending last season with the Philadelphia Eagles as their defensive coordinator. Under Desai's leadership, the Eagles defense finished 10th in opponent rushing yards allowed (1,758) and rushing touchdowns allowed (13). The unit was tied for fifth in the NFL with 264 pressures and eighth with 230 hurries.
Desai also guided Outside Linebacker Haason Reddick to an 11.0-sack season, which tied for 15th in the league. His 67 pressures ranked tied for 18th and his 41 hurries ranked 25th. Defensive Lineman Josh Sweat finished the season with 45 hurries, which was tied for the 18th-most during the 2023 campaign to go along with 68 pressures which was the 17th-highest total. Reddick and Sweat finished in the top-10 in quarterback hits, with Reddick's 24 ranking tied for 13th and Sweat's 23 ranking tied for 16th. Reddick was voted to his second Pro Bowl. Additionally under Desai's leadership in 2023, rookie Defensive Lineman Jalen Carter was a finalist for the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year Award after finishing in the top five among rookies in sacks, pressures, hurries, and tackles for loss.
Prior to his time in Philadelphia, Desai spent a season with the Seattle Seahawks serving as the associate head coach and defensive assistant in 2022. He helped the Seahawks earn a playoff berth and the defensive unit finished fourth in the NFL in forced fumbles (15), seventh in sacks (45.0), eighth in takeaways (25), 13th in opponent passing yards per game (211.5), fifth in opponent fourth down conversion percentage (39.3%), and tied for fifth in fumble recoveries (10). Desai also helped rookie Cornerback Tariq Woolen and Safety Quandre Diggs earn Pro Bowl honors. Additionally in 2022, Seahawks Outside Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu finished in the top-20 in sacks with a career-best 9.5, 16th in pressures (61), 12th in quarterback hits (26), and tied for 24th in hurries (35).
Before his stint in Seattle, Desai spent nine seasons with the Chicago Bears serving in various roles (2013-21). He was the team's defensive coordinator in 2021 when the Bears defense finished sixth in the NFL in opponent yards per game (316.7), third in opponent passing yards per game (191.6), seventh in opponent first downs per game (18.9), 11th in opponent third down conversion percentage (38.4%), 13th in opponent red zone efficiency (55.6%), and second in opponent completions (314). That season, Desai also became the first person of Indian descent to hold a coordinator position in the NFL.
With Desai's guidance, Outside Linebacker Robert Quinn broke Chicago's single-season sack record with 18.5. He was named Second-Team AP All-Pro and earned his third Pro Bowl nod that season. Quinn registered at least a half sack in 14 of 16 games played, including 12.0 in the last eight games.
From 2019-20, Desai coached safeties with the Bears. In 2020, Safeties Eddie Jackson and Tashaun Gipson Sr. helped the defense hold opposing passing attacks to 231.0 yards per game and haul in three game-winning interceptions on opponent's final drives.
In 2019, Desai guided Jackson to his second-consecutive Pro Bowl while Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix shined in his first season with the team recording 78 tackles and two interceptions. Both players played key roles in limiting opposing offenses to 222.1 passing yards per game, which ranked ninth in the NFL that season.
As a quality control coach from 2013-18, Desai worked with the Bears defensive backs and linebackers while also assisting the special teams coaches.
He joined the NFL coaching ranks after spending the 2012 season as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Boston College. That season, the Eagles led the NCAA in punt return average with 21.7 yards per return. Desai also mentored Running Back Andre Williams, who went on to win the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back a year later.
Before his time at Boston College, Desai was the assistant director of football operations at the University of Miami in 2011 after spending five seasons at Temple as a defensive and special teams coach from 2006-10. In 2010, he served as the special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach. He was one of the youngest coordinators in the country that season at the age of 27. In 2010, Temple's special teams unit ranked second in the nation in kickoff coverage, allowing just 17.4 yards per return. The defense also ranked 16th in the nation in total defense (317.7 yards per game). Temple's defense also finished 15th in opponents passing yards per game (178.2) and their nine passing touchdowns allowed were tied for the second-fewest in the FBS.
From 2007-10, Desai was a graduate assistant for the Owls and helped with special teams, defense, and academics. During his time as a graduate assistant, Temple's special teams had the nation's top kickoff return unit in 2008, averaging 26.6 yards per return while tying for second in the nation with two kickoff return touchdowns. In 2009, the Owls recorded their longest winning streak in program history (nine), en route to the Mid-American Conference East Division Co-Championship and their first bowl game in 30 years.
Desai earned his doctorate in educational administration, with an emphasis in higher education, at Temple in May of 2008. He served as an adjunct professor at the school in 2009 and 2010 and taught education administration in the master's and doctoral programs.
Desai and his wife have two sons and a daughter.
