Women's History Month Staff Showcase with Lauren Hess: On her path to her analytics and STEAM career, and inspiring confidence in young people through representation

As part of the Rams' celebration of Women's History Month this month, the organization wants to inspire Angelenos through stories of female staff changing the game on and off the field.

We begin this year's series with Consumer Insights Analyst Lauren Hess.

Lauren Hess, a Consumer Insights Analyst in the Rams' Marketing department, has been with the team for two-and-a-half years. She focuses on data science and analytics projects that help the team understand "behaviors and patterns in which consumers connect and engage with our brand, and leverage data to strategically support brand initiatives and expand our reach," she said.

In a male-dominated field, Hess said representation can be "incredibly empowering." Hess' mom spent her entire career at one company, also in a male-dominated field, and she taught Hess how to handle tough conversations and be confident in herself, while also being open to feedback and growth.

"I am most motivated by the people around me," Hess said. "The energy and support I feel from those close to me inspires me to be the best version of myself every day. Passion and drive are contagious, and by surrounding myself with people who share the same values and work ethic, I am constantly being pushed toward my full potential."

Hess has enjoyed seeing women at the Rams earn more opportunities to lead. During Women's History Month she believes people should honor the contributions of impactful women by highlighting their barrier-breaking stories and amplifying their voices.

"I'm excited to be a part of the group of women who are helping pave the way for those who aspire to work in sports after us and I cannot wait to see the growing role we will play in this industry," Hess said.

When women see women thriving in male-dominated fields, she said it helps them believe they can do the same.

"Representation inspires confidence and opens the door for people to pursue their passions without feeling restricted by outdated stereotypes," Hess said.

Her top three recommendations for finding success in the data science field are mastering SQL, understanding how to perform and interpret different types of statistical models/testing and data storytelling.

Hess brings a fresh perspective that combines data-driven insights with pathos, allowing her to "listen to, understand, and appreciate the viewpoints of others." Blending analytical thinking with her emotional intelligence has allowed her to build stronger connections that encourage collaboration and are rooted in trust.

Her career in STEAM and analytics requires a lot of studying and constant willingness to learn. The field of data science and analytics is rapidly evolving, so staying up to date with industry trends and advancements is equally important as knowledge of stats and data science.

"The best part of my job is merging my two passions - data and sports," Hess said. "I got my degree in Statistics and Data Science while playing D1 Soccer, so getting to apply that knowledge in an industry I am passionate about feels like the perfect combo. On top of that, working in sports means being surrounded by competitive people who consistently challenge one another to drive innovation.

"I have really enjoyed the connections I've made and the knowledge I've gained during my time at the Rams."
