MINNEAPOLIS — Running back Todd Gurley has been rewarded for his tremendous 2017 season, as the Associated Press named him Offensive Player of the Year at Saturday's NFL Honors ceremony.
In his third year out of Georgia, Gurley led the league with 2,093 yards from scrimmage, 19 total touchdowns, and 13 rushing touchdowns. The running back also finished No. 2 with 1,305 yards rushing.
Los Angeles' entire offense displayed tremendous improvement in 2017 under the direction of head coach Sean McVay, and Gurley is a prime example. The running back took just one more carry — in one fewer game — than he did in 2016, but rushed for 420 more yards and seven more touchdowns. Gurley also set new career highs in receptions (64), yards receiving (788), and receiving touchdowns (six), truly becoming a dual-threat back.
The AP award is one of many accolades Gurley has received since the conclusion of the 2017 season. He was also named Offensive Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America, as well as an AP First-team All-Pro.
Gurley is the first Ram to be named AP Offensive Player of the Year since 2001, when Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk received the honor. Gurley is only the third player in franchise history to be named AP Offensive Player of the Year. Faulk won the award three times from 1999-2001, and running back Eric Dickerson earned the honor in 1986.
