Subrina Miller was overcome with emotion when the Los Angeles Rams surprised her as a "pLAymaker" at an event she organized for the Heads Up Foundation. Helping people has been her life's work for over 20 years, and she was honored for that on Saturday.

"That means you [the Rams] see me when I don't think anyone's looking," Miller said. "The work that we do in giving back is something that the Rams do, and I'm honored to be named in that capacity."

38 years ago, Miller was pregnant and homeless, she told LA Voyage in 2019. But someone helped her get back on her feet, so she dedicated her life to doing the same for others. Last Saturday, she accepted a $5,000 check to her foundation, courtesy of the Rams.

For the past 26 years, she's been the CEO of the Heads Up Foundation, helping students and families who are resource deprived. They organize events such as food and meal distributions, toy drives, back-to-school giveaways and more. That's why she was honored as the sixth Rams "pLAymaker" of 2024.

"Our mission is simply to reach back and help someone," Miller said. "Why does that mean so much to me? It's because one day somebody reached back and helped me."

The Heads Up Foundation does more than just provide resources. They inspire change in and around Inglewood, Calif. In addition to gathering goods, they also produce women's empowerment events and collaborate with local businesses in service of their goals.

According to the website, their official mission is, "to offer educational support and promote community awareness to families in Inglewood and surrounding areas, with a focus on at-risk youth. Through partnerships with other local organizations, restaurants, and schools, Heads Up's goal is always to 'reach back and help someone.'"

Miller has done several events with the Rams and knows their commitment to helping the community aligns with her organization's aims.

"I did these things because that's what we do," Miller said. "That's what they [the Rams] stand for. They don't just play football, they go out into the community, have conversations with people. So we talk, we find out what they need, I find out what they need, and we work together to give back to the community with that."

The Heads Up Foundation's team consists of volunteers & professionals from the community who work to enhance the capabilities of youth and young adults in the area, according to the website. They do that through outreach, mentorship and fundraising events.

For their back-to-school event last Saturday, they partnered with multiple companies such as Planet Fitness, Goddess Gift Studio and others to gather supplies. There were tents stuffed with backpacks, food, and other supplies at Jesse Owens Park that were given out to families. The area was also filled with footballs, music and inflatable obstacle courses to give the kids some entertainment.

"If we touch one person, then our living is not in vain," Miller said. "This whole concept of why we do what we do, it's not in vain."

Miller started helping people through small acts and worked her way up to where she is today, leading an organization dedicated to serving at-risk youth.

"I say you start one day at a time," Miller said. "If you didn't do anything but give someone a compliment, encourage somebody, that's starting one day at a time to get to a point to support them in another way."
