McVay on coaching staff continuity going into 2025: 'Unless guys get better opportunities, we'll have the same staff next year'

For what feels like perhaps the first time in Sean McVay's tenure as Rams head coach, he will have a strong amount of continuity on the coaching staff heading into an offseason.

McVay said Thursday that other than staff members who leave for promotions, last season's group will largely carry over into 2025.

"Unless guys get better opportunities, we'll have the same staff next year," McVay said. "I don't know what to do with myself the fact that we're not having to worry about losing guys to head coaching jobs this offseason. I feel a little weird right now."

While there will be anticipated stability at offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator, some Rams assistant coaches have already gotten interviews, or been speculated as targets for openings.

McVay confirmed that assistant head coach/pass game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant, who also coached Los Angeles' defensive backs, was requested by the Chicago Bears to interview for their defensive coordinator job.

McVay also said that he has spoken with tight ends coach/pass game coordinator Nick Caley about the New York Jets' offensive coordinator job, though McVay had yet to receive a formal interview request for Caley from them.

Additionally, assistant defensive line coach AC Carter "might have an opportunity to elevate himself," McVay said.

McVay also confirmed that John "Stretch" Streicher, who served as game management coordinator this past season, departed to reunite with Mike Vrabel on the Patriots' coaching staff. Vrabel and Streicher worked together at the Tennessee Titans from 2018-2023.

"But other than those guys, I think there will be possibly some things, especially as some of these head coaches are starting to get hired, there will be some names out there," McVay said. "But as it relates to keeping the continuity of our coordinators, that looks like that'll be intact, and I'm really grateful for that."

Should that remain the case, it would mark the first time McVay has carried over the same offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator (with another coaching staff member in the role) for consecutive seasons. The closest example of that continuity he had was across the 2018 and 2019 seasons, when he served as the de-facto offensive coordinator – since no one on the staff had the title – with Wade Phillips as his defensive coordinator and John Fassel as his special teams coordinator.

Rams coordinators under McVay (since 2017)

Year Offensive Coordinator Defensive Coordinator Special Teams Coordinator
2017 Matt LaFleur Wade Phillips John Fassel
2018 None Wade Phillips John Fassel
2019 None Wade Phillips John Fassel
2020 Kevin O'Connell Brandon Staley John Bonamego
2021 Kevin O'Connell Raheem Morris Joe DeCamillis
2022 Liam Coen Raheem Morris Joe DeCamillis
2023 Mike LaFleur Raheem Morris Chase Blackburn
2024 Mike LaFleur Chris Shula Chase Blackburn
2025 Mike LaFleur Chris Shula Chase Blackburn

In terms of other members of the coaching staff, there's been attrition in some form or fashion every year since the 2018 offseason, and that continued with Streicher's departure to New England.

From a planning perspective, McVay said not having to replace his coordinators is "huge." While he gets excited about the chance to onboard new coaches and learn from them, continuity in those leadership positions – especially with the amount of autonomy given to and earned by those coaches later in the season – means a great deal.

"When you have (offensive coordinator) Mike (LaFleur) and (defensive coordinator) Chris (Shula) and what (special teams coordinator) Chase (Blackburn) has done over the last couple of years, that's a really good thing," McVay said. "A lot of continuity with the position coaches is where you can start to build on things. As you reflect back on the season, there are a lot of things that I'm excited about diving into that we can try to do a better job collectively of making sure that we don't necessarily... we want to try to avoid some of the adversity. I'm sure proud of the way that we've been able to overcome it, but you'd like to avoid some of the things if at all possible. We're excited about diving into the tactical part of it, to the schematic part of it, but it's huge. This is a really special coaching staff that we had this past year. I think a lot of the cool things that this journey brought us on this past year is an incredibly cool reflection of the leadership of that coaching staff. I was proud to be a part of it."
