The Los Angeles Rams offense is "right on track" to roll out wide receiver Cooper Kupp when Week 1 hits and the team heads to Carolina for the season opener against the Panthers.
Over six months since Kupp suffered the left ACL tear that prematurely ended his pro second season, McVay took to the podium following OTA No. 7 and said his staff is continuing its efforts to hold back the determined pass-catcher.
"He's really doing an excellent job staying right on track, making good progress, and we want it this way, where we've got to pull him back because he's so excited to get back out there," McVay said. "He wants to return to the competition with his teammates."
Kupp stands out on the Rams' practice field in Thousand Oaks, Calif., joining quarterback Jared Goff and a handful of other teammates who don a bright red 'watch out for me' practice jersey in his limited reps, jogging routes against the defense.
When he's not nailing down installs alongside the offesnes's top unit, Kupp can be seen getting constant work with the Rams training staff — cruising agility ladders, rounding obstacles, even catching passes from head trainer Reggie Scott.
There is no exact timeline for Kupp's full, though it's not too much of a stretch to think he'll be ready for more action when the Rams begin training camp on July 26 — a date that is still over a month away. Just before providing an update on his rising slot receiver, McVay said the plan remains the same for his guys concerning the preseason — don't expect to see a lot of starters.
"As long as we feel like the guys who have played a lot of football — they've gotten some good work — then I think you'll see us err on the side of guys who have played a lot of football, probably won't see much in the preseason," McVay said.
And considering the attention McVay has put on preserving his top personnel in the past, closely monitoring the reintegration of one of his top receivers for much of the last two seasons seems par for the course as Kupp heads for year three.
"As far as the plan that we echo, we are right on track with that and feel good about it," McVay finished.
