From the Podium: Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay share takeaways from joint practice with Cowboys

OXNARD, Calif. – Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay each held press conferences with local media Thursday following the team's joint practice with the Cowboys, discussing what they saw from offense as a whole and individual standouts in the session.

Here are some of the highlights and key takeaways from those conversations, which you can watch below. From the Podium for Preseason Week 1 against the Cowboys is presented by Paramount+.

"How absolutely old I looked. I was asking the DBs, I was like, "Man, how bad did that look?'" – Stafford

  • That was Stafford's reaction to his self-touchdown pass against the Cowboys.
  • "They couldn't touch me or whatever, but they were just laughing at me," Stafford said. "I would have laughed at myself too, but shoot, I guess it worked."

"We called the practice a little bit like that, unknowing of [the] scheme, just personnel-wise. I thought our guys went out and executed pretty well." – Stafford

  • Stafford was pleased with what he saw from the Rams' offensive line against a Cowboys pass rush led by Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence.
  • I think Sean called this practice a little bit like we would call a game versus the team like that," Stafford said. "It's like, 'Hey, we are probably going to be a little bit heavier in the run game, getting some quicks off and if we're throwing it down the field, we're going to make sure we're closing the edges to try to help out."

"Stop, stop, stop, stop. Hey, he had fun though." – McVay

  • That was what McVay said he was thinking as he watched Stafford corral his own deflected pass and run into the endzone for a touchdown during one play in team drills Thursday.
  • "You could see though the respect that they had for him. They kind of all just let up and he was enjoying that," McVay said. "I got asked about that. That was a fun play, but I was thinking, stop."

"We haven't decided that yet. Those are the things that we'll talk about over the next couple of days." – McVay

  • The Rams are still working through who will and won't play in Sunday's preseason opener against the Cowboys, according to McVay, with the exception of the usual veterans.
  • "Obviously, I made a mention of the guys that have played in this league. They won't do that [play]. The guys that you guys could probably project... okay, are they playing or are they not?" McVay said. "It is important work though."
