INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Quarterback Stetson Bennett threw the go-ahead, 47-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver JJ Laap with 9:48 left in the fourth quarter, and the Rams wouldn't relinquish that lead the rest of the way in their 13-9 victory over the Chargers on Saturday at SoFi Stadium.
Assistant head coach/pass game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant served as head coach in the victory to get reps in that role, while Sean McVay spent the majority of the game in the coach's booth.
Here are five takeaways from the contest:
1) McCollough shines: Defensive back Jaylen McCollough had an impressive game overall, and the tone for that performance was set in the first half. He Peanut Punched the ball from Chargers wide receiver Brenden Rice's grasp for a third-down stop in the first quarter, then came up with an interception off of a deflected Easton Stick pass late in the first half. He also had 2 passes defensed.
2) Bennett watch: Quarterback Stetson Bennett got the start once again and was a player to watch, primarily because head coach Sean McVay said this week "we still have to be able to see some more body of work" when asked if he feels Bennett can be the backup QB going into the season.
Just as he did last week, he rebounded from a turnover to help pull the Rams ahead.
Bennett led the Rams on a trio of scoring drives – the first ended with field goals, the third the go-ahead, 47-yard passing touchdown to wide receiver JJ Laap with 9:48 remaining – and finished 17 for 31 for 213 yards with one touchdown against one interception overall. The pick came on a pass intended for Xavier Smith on 4th and goal from the Chargers 1.
3) Smith shows up again: The wide receiver's 22-yard catch down the left side line that helped the Rams almost get points on that same drive off the Watkins-forced turnover, and later he had a 16-yard punt return to put the Rams at the Chargers 39.
His pass interference drawn against the the Chargers defense on 3rd and 4 from the Rams' 36 gave them a first down to keep alive the drive that resulted in that touchdown pass from Bennett to Laap.
4) Recently-signed defensive lineman makes a play: Carlos Watkins' strip-sack against Chargers quarterback Luis Perez led to the drive that ended at the Chargers' 1-yard line.
5) Hummel and Speights everywhere: Linebackers Jacob Hummel and Omar Speights were active throughout. Hummel reached 5 total tackles and was the first to the fumble on a botched snap by the Chargers at the Rams 1-yard line in the first half; Speights led the team with 7 total tackles (2 for loss).
