Los Angeles Rams punter Ethan Evans has been on a tear lately.
He ranks second in the NFL in punts placed inside the 20 on a percentage basis and has only two touchbacks in 53 attempts. He's also one of the most improved Rams, having added three yards to his net punt average compared to his rookie season.
However, on Saturday night in a win over the Arizona Cardinals, things went a bit sideways in the second quarter. Not only did Evans angle a punt a bit too sharply to the right sideline for 46 yards, he was then hit with a 15-yard penalty for an illegal blindside block.
The world took notice as the NFL Network television broadcast went to commercial break, including the most popular punter on the planet.
As it turned out, the foul was on No. 42 of the Cardinals, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, not No. 42 Ethan Evans. Thankfully, that got straightened out during the stoppage. But by the time the dust settled, Evans was a bit of an internet sensation.
"It wouldn't surprise me if the TV copy of my face after they called it on me turns into a meme," Evan said on the latest Rams Revealed. "I was in no-man's land. There was nobody within 20 yards of me.
"I got to my phone after the game and there were about 30 messages like, 'No way. You got an illegal blindside block. Like, that's kinda cool.'"
For a small-school product, from an even smaller hometown of Lowgap, NC (population of fewer than 200 people), it was a surreal moment. The story of how Evans found Division II Wingate University and became an NFL punter might be even more difficult to believe.
