Last August, Rams head coach Sean McVay called the team's depth at cornerback a "positive problem" to have as it approached the 53-man roster deadline.
At the time, Los Angeles was returning four of its five cornerbacks who were on its initial 53-man roster in 2018. The group was deep enough – thanks to strong preseason performances – that the Rams chose to have six on their initial 53-man roster.
Despite L.A. trading its top two outside cornerbacks and dealing with injuries, the talent acquired and the opportunities afforded to others in the group has group well-positioned from a depth standpoint this offseason.
In October, the Rams traded Marcus Peters to the Ravens to make way for Jalen Ramsey, adding a two-time Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro selection to their roster.
Ramsey's arrival in the secondary coincided with the Rams' pass rush accumulating 37 of its 50 sacks on the season. He finished with four pass breakups and one interception in nine games, earning his third Pro Bowl honor in the process.
They also dealt their other starting cornerback, Aqib Talib, to the Dolphins later that month, which elevated to Hill to a permanent starting role opposite Ramsey.
Hill already had been starting in place of Talib while Talib dealt with a rib injury. He went on to start in every game through Week 15, until sustaining a thumb injury that week which required season-ending surgery. Hill finished the season with eight pass breakups and two interceptions.
Hill's thumb injury, in turn, set the stage for more opportunities for rookie David Long Jr. and Darious Williams across the final two weeks of the season. Williams, who replaced Hill during Los Angeles' Week 15 game in Dallas, played 175 of his 221 snaps on the season across Weeks 15-17, according to Pro Football Focus. Long played a season-high 52 snaps in Week 17 against the Cardinals.
Add in the return of slot cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman, who, alongside Hill, was one of the Top 25 cornerbacks in the regular season according to PFF, and cornerback should be a strength for L.A.'s defense once again in 2020.
