LOS ANGELES – Rams running backs coach Ron Gould has the autonomy to dictate the scope of those players' involvement in practice, in terms of how many snaps each player gets, or the scope of their role.
In Blake Corum, he sees a rookie still growing and developing, but one who has shown enough of both to this point to be on track to be a complementary piece to starter Kyren Williams.
"This is something that is earned," Gould told theRams.com. "And I think he's done a fabulous job of coming in, learning the system, and when we're asking him to go in, he's ready to go. He's been a pro's pro. He's a young man that is very passionate about the game. He cares, he studies it, he rewrites his notes, he's asking a lot of a lot of great questions. So these are the things that I've seen. And then he's got in in practice, and he's executed at a very high level."
In OTAs, Corum saw a healthy workload as he learned Los Angeles' playbook because of Williams being sidelined for most of it with a foot injury. In the time between the end of minicamp and the start of training camp, he continued to dive into the playbook – reinforcing the conscientious work ethic Gould noted. (To be fair, Corum didn't spend the entirety of that break learning the Rams' plays – he also got engaged.)
"I had about 40 days off, so I was just studying my plays," Corum said. "So right now I'm just going out there more confident. I'm not really thinking as much as I was during OTAs, (when) being brand new in the playbook. I kind of understand the playbook now, and so I'm able to play fast and do what I do."
Corum said his goals for now are to take things a day at a time. He doesn't have any "big goals," just to be as prepared as he possibly can to do whatever the team asks of him, and at his best capability.
If he continues to progress the way he has, that will help Gould and the Rams achieve their ultimate goal for the running back room this season.
"The biggest thing is we want to be able to keep the backs fresh, okay, and we want (head) coach (Sean) McVay) to be able to call the game how he calls it," Gould said. "And I think Blake, he's not there yet, but he's working to be. He's very complimentary, and he's getting up to speed. So the task right now is to make sure that he continues to grow and continues to have the reps underneath his belt where he feels great at what he can do."
